Assembling the nest boxes.
Go back to cutting nest box dados

Please forgive the lack of pictures, they will have to wait until I get a shop back together again. And please check each dimension before cutting. Some of these drawings were made after the fact and errors more than likely have been made. I take full responsibility for the errors but please remember
"Measure twice, cut once "

Cutting nest boxes

The nest boxes are cut from a single sheet of 1/2" plywood. Thicker plywood would work but is not necessary. There are two next boxes in the front, both divided in two compartments. The drawings are shown for the version using dados, to build without dados use the drawings listed on the drawing page. The only differences are dimensions and the dados.

Bottom and back

The bottom and back of the nest boxes are dadoed for the center divider and sides. Dimensions are the same for dado and non dado. Set the dado blade for the plywood thickness, typically 15/32" for what is called 1/2 plywood. Placing the center divider exactly on center is not critical, very close to center is good enough.

Sides

The sides and divider are cut out next.

Assembling the nest boxes

The sides and divider are set into the dados with a water proof glue and held in place with some brads. A 22" by 3/4" by 3 1/2" header is placed across the bottom and a 22" by 3/4" by 1 1/2" pace is placed along the bottom. The nest box is placed into the openings and nailed or screwed in place throught the sides and bottom. Material used on the coop siding can be cut to cover the exterior of the box.

Lid

The lid uses is simply a square of the plywood with 1X2 material on three sides. The lid should fit snugly to reduce drafts and keep out unwanted visitors. The lid will be slightly smaller if no siding is used on the box so be sure to make allowances for the siding. The angle cut should overhang the trim slightly. The angles shown in the drawing should match the angles on the nest box itself. Attach the lid to the side of the coop using a minimum of two sturdy hinges. Cover the top with the same roofing material used on the coop roof.
