Section 9 Finishing the base

Section 8 - Base options

This is a continuance of the optional boxing in of the base. All the panels were cut from a single piece of plywood. They were nailed and glued into the cutouts on the base. Again, cleats would work as well if you do not have a router.

The base is mostly complete. You can sand it and give a coat of paint or varnish. I plan to do an all over sanding with 120 and 180 then varnish it. The varnish is more for protection than anything else. This is not furniture but a utility bench.

As for the top, in keeping with the need to keep costs and skills down, it will be of ¾ MDF with hardwood edges. You could build a traditional top here or one of 2X4s.

The base will work for any type of workbench. It is sturdy, cheap and easy to build. Make one for woodworking and another for repairing lawn mower engines. Now it is time to clean up.
